Riding High: Sewanee Equestrian sees Early Spring Season Success

Sewanee Equestrian crushing the competition with athlete highlights and more.

The Spring Season has kicked off for the Sewanee Equestrian team and some early success has been seen. The team has already had two shows, the Middle Tennessee State University Spring Show, along with their second home show of the year and the first of the season.

In the Middle Tennessee State show, Sewanee saw a fourth-place finish on the first day with highlights from the introductory division as freshman Hannah Fitzgerald and sophomore Abdul Maflahi took home first and second place in their division. On the second day of the event the Sewanee Tigers took home a first place tie with Middle Tennessee State. Junior Nell Grady won the Open Fences division, with freshman Emma Sameth finishing second and freshman Jenna McAmis finishing fifth in the same division. With strong performances from both Shelton Griffith and Emma Sameth, they qualified for regionals for their divisions. The overall stellar performance of the team allowed for Sewanee to step into first place of the overall religion standings.

More recently Sewanee had a showcase at their very own Howell Equestrian Center, where they would take home first place on the first day and fourth on the second. Sewanee’s day one performance was highlighted by Junior Mollie Mchorter’s High Point finish and Nell Grady’s Reserve High Point. Alongside a slew of strong performances the Sewanee Tigers would crush their competition by a whole eleven points on day 1 of the event. On day 2 Sewanee would continue the success with Emma Sameth achieving Reserve High Point while also achieving second place in the open fences division and third in open flat division.

Sewanee would also compete in the individual regional championships on March 3rd with Emma Sameth and Nell Grady finishing second and third in the High Point Rider of the Year award. Sewanee would qualify as the first team to find a spot in the region. It comes as no surprise at all that the Sewanee Equestrian team is having a stellar spring season and will continue to do so with Zone 5 championships soon and hopefully some qualifications for the National championship.
