Yea Sewanee Spikes: a Preview Of Rhodes Vs. Sewanee Volleyball

The Sewanee Volleyball season is underway, and 8 games into the season the Lady Tigers sit at 3-5. Having had a difficult slate of games against powerhouses like #23 in the Division III Coaches poll Washington and Lee and current SAA leader Centre, the season has not necessarily gone according to plan. However, the Tigers' record does not tell the full story, and there is a lot of potential for this Tiger Team.

Led by Junior Captain Emma Meyer, who currently leads the team in assists and aces, and Sophomore Savannah Gann, who had a stellar performance in the Berry Kick-off tournament in early September, the Tigers face their bitter rival, The Rhodes College Lynx, in Memphis on September 29th. The Lynx currently have a record of 8-5 and 1-0 in the SAA. Rhodes is always an important game for any Sewanee Tigers team, but this matchup is especially important for the Tigers if they want to stay in the conversation for the SAA championship.

Historically, Sewanee has had Rhodes’s number, but not by a large margin. Since 2007, when Sewanee and Rhodes first started playing, Sewanee is 17-14 and 8-2 in their last 10 matchups against Rhodes. Despite this tally, Rhodes does a good job of protecting the home turf with a record of 6-7.  In last years’ match-up, Sewanee lost a nailbiter that went to 5 sets. In a striking show of resilience, Sewanee tied the match up, but ultimately the final set was 15-8.

Hopefully, we do not see a repeat of last year: this match could turn the tide for this Tiger team, as we see them focus on winning an SAA championship and making the NCAA tournament. Good luck to those Tigers as they continue their season!
